Description

Keyboard navigation provides all web and app users with a fast keyboard-only navigation capability and is also part of the web accessibility features–it enables users with disabilities to fully control their website or app access through the keyboard.

By default, users can only navigate to links, buttons, and form controls with a keyboard. The navigation order in which interactive items receive keyboard focus has to be logical and intuitive. Generally, keyboard navigation logic needs to follow the visual horizontal and vertical flow of the page, for example, left to right and top to bottom, header first followed by the main and then the page navigation.

The keyboard navigation of the Kendo UI for jQuery TreeList is always available as demonstrated in this demo.

This TreeList example is part of a unique collection of hundreds of jQuery demos, with which you can see all Kendo UI for jQuery components and their features in action. View the source code of the demos from the library or directly adapt, and edit them and their theme appearance in Kendo UI for jQuery Dojo or ThemeBuilder.

The TreeList supports the following keyboard shortcuts:

Focus

  • Alt + W Focuses the component.

Actions Applied to the TreeList Header

  • Enter Sorts by the column.
  • Ctrl + Left Arrow Reorders the column with the previous one.
  • Ctrl + Right Arrow Reorders the column with the next one.

Actions Applied to the TreeList Data Table

  • Arrow Keys Navigate over the cells.
  • Space Selects the row holding the currently highlighted cell.
  • Ctrl + Space (For the multiple selection mode) Selects or deselects the current row while persisting the previously selected rows.
  • Shift + Space Performs range selection, selects all the rows between the last selected one (with Space or mouse click) and the one holding the focused cell.
  • Shift + Arrow Keys (For the multiple selection mode) Adds the row which holds the focused cell to the selection.
  • Enter or F2 Puts the item in the edit mode. If performed over a command column, focuses the first focusable element inside it.
  • Esc Cancels the edit or, if an element inside a cell is focused, returns the focus to the table.
  • Alt + Right Arrow Expands the current item.
  • Alt + Left Arrow Collapses the current item.
  • Ctrl + Home Focuses the first focusable element inside the body.
  • Ctrl + End Focuses the last focusable element inside the body.
  • Home Focuses the first focusable cell in the row.
  • End Focuses the last focusable cell in the row.

Actions Applied to the TreeList Pager

  • Tab Focuses the Pager wrapper.
  • Enter When the Pager wrapper is focused, changes the focus to the first focusable Pager element.
  • Esc When an inner Pager element is focused, changes the focus to the Pager wrapper.
  • Tab When an inner Pager element is focused, changes the focus to the next Pager element.
  • Shift + Tab When an inner Pager element is focused, changes the focus to the previous Pager element.
  • Left Arrow When the Pager wrapper is focused, loads the previous page if it exists.
  • Page Up When the Pager wrapper is focused, loads the previous page if it exists.
  • Right Arrow When the Pager wrapper is focused, loads the next page if it exists.
  • Page Down When the Pager wrapper is focused, loads the next page if it exists.
  • Home When the Pager wrapper is focused, loads the first page if the current page is not already the first one.
  • End When the Pager wrapper is focused, loads the last page if the current page is not already the last one.
