Rila Monastery

This wildly beautiful monastery is named after its founder, the hermit Ivan of Rila. Ornate frescos cover the walls and ceilings of the monastery in an explosion of vibrant detail. It’s the largest and most famous Eastern Orthodox monastery in Bulgaria and bus service is available to and from Sophia.

Alexander Nevsky Cathedral

This Bulgarian Orthodox cathedral is built in Neo-Byzantine style and located in the heart of Sophia. Catch a glimpse of the mint green and gold domes from all over the city. The church was built to hold an astonishing 5,000 people and has 12 bells brought from Moscow—the largest weighing 12 tons and the smallest weighing just 10 kilograms.

Madara Rider

A symbol of the Bulgarian people, history and culture, the Madara Rider or Madara Horseman is an early medieval rock relief carved on the Madara Plateau that dates back to 710 AD. The monument sits 246 feet above ground on the cliff face. The real mystery is that the relief is inaccessible.

The Basilica of the Holy Mother of God Eleusa

Located on the north side of the peninsula in Nessebar, the Basilica of the Holy Mother of God Eleusa was built in the 6th century and is believed to have been destroyed by an earthquake. The former monastery church is dedicated the Blessed Virgin Mary under the title, “Eleusa”, meaning “the Tender”.

Church of St. George

The Church of St. George is considered the oldest building in Sophia. You’ll find it behind the Sheraton Hotel within the remains of the ancient town of Serdica. The church is famous for the frescos inside the central dome, which were originally painted in the 12th century, painted over during the Ottoman period and restored in the 20th century.
